Reflexology – allowing the natural energy to flow
Reflexology is a very nurturing treatments that improves general wellbeing.
The physical and psychological effects from these treatments can vary from individual to individual but as a general rule, reflexology can aid relaxation and reduce stress and tension. It can also encourage the release of toxins and reduce congestion within the body to allow it to regain its equilibrium.
It is evidently becoming more common to see reflexology treatments (amongst others) being offered to patients in the palliative setting, along with patients that are being diagnosed with potentially incurable disease.
A growing number of medical clinicians are recommending it to be used alongside conventional treatments.
Reflexology benefits
As well as improving wellbeing and reducing stress, reflexology can help improve headaches, neck & back aches, sleep and digestion.
I have personal experience of treating specific aches & pain including frozen shoulders with reflexology meaning no medication has been required, and great success at alleviating constipation again to avoid taking medication.
Reflexology has been practised for 5000 years
The art of reflexology dates back at least 5000 years to Ancient Egypt, India and China. The therapy itself was not introduced to the west until Dr William Fitzgerald developed ‘zone therapy’. He believed that reflex areas on the hands and feet were linked to other areas and organs of the body within the same zone.
In the 1930’s Eunice Ingham further developed this zone theory into what is known today as reflexology. Her opinion was that congestion or tension in any part of the foot can be mirrored in the corresponding part of the body.
Natural flow of energy throughout the body
Reflexology is based on the idea that the body has a natural energy that flows throughout the zones to maintain optimum health. If this energy is disrupted or blocked it can cause ill health and a lack of well-being.
By using the tips of the fingers and thumbs to apply pressure to the reflex areas on the feet, an assessment of general health can be made.
If a particular area of the foot is sensitive to pressure or crystalline deposits (grittiness) can be felt, it can indicate that there is a specific imbalance in this particular part of the body.
The foot maps used in reflexology are mirrors of the body including head, spine, limbs and all internal organs. As pressure is applied on specific reflexes within the feet it treats the corresponding part of the body.
